I believe one of the reasons people are not well is because they have stopped listening to their instincts and started trusting everyone else with their health. I am a health coach, one who is invested in her clients and who makes recommendations on how to get well. BUT, in my disclaimer I even tell you not to listen to me if what I say doesn’t resonate with you. Why is everyone trusting everyone else with their health? No one lives inside your body….no one but you can really know what is going on.
I will use an old client as an example. She came to me with gut issues (chronic constipation and pain), acne, fatigue and thyroid problems. When I got her list of medications and supplements to review with her intake form I saw a powder her doctor gave her to “heal her gut”. She said every time she drank the powder mix her stomach hurt worse. It was a doctors grade protein “anti inflammatory” powder combination. Inactive ingredients to name only a few: Rice syrup solids, Guar gum, Xantham gum, Carageenan, Evaporated Cane Juice. These are all ingredients that people with leaky gut should stay away from to avoid potential additional inflammation. My advice to her was to of course go to her doctor and ask about the ingredients and whether they were good for her gut issue. I gave her resources to back up my concerns and the next time we met she said she went off of the powder and all her pain was gone. Constipation continued so we worked on it with other interventions but the gas pain was totally gone.
This is a prime example of someone who was having reactions from something she was TOLD would help her and she was TOLD to take until her next appointment. She paid over $50 for the container and felt bad about the money so she continued to drink it despite adverse reactions and her body’s signals.
So, for the most part instead of saying “Let’s get to the bottom of this symptom of fibrogmyalgia, thyroid disease, migraine….” patients are given a pill or a big bag of stuff (bandaids) to try. Eventually the bandaids stop working and the body’s message goes from a whisper to a scream. The disease/condition/illness that was brewing reveals itself in a much angrier state and the patient goes back to the doctor for help and typically they receive a different or additional medication which may provide some relief for awhile….but the disease/condition/illness continues. You see where I am going with this.
Let’s get off the subject of doctors for a minute and talk about something closer to home. Multi Level Marketing pushers (MLM). You know the ones who sell the energy drinks and protein powders to give you that “extra boost” before your workout and to help you recover after? Let me set up a scenario for you. I will use the name Sue for a past client of mine who was using these products when she came to me. Sue was overweight, exhausted and struggling with insomnia and brain fog. When I reviewed her exercise routine I found she was doing some 45 minute classes at the local gym 4 days a week and running 3-5 miles on the other days. On her “more exhausted days” she was drinking the energy drink “to get me through the workout”. Afterwards she was drinking the protein mix and skipping lunch. Did I mention she was not eating breakfast either? I asked her why she continued to work out when her body was clearly telling her she was too tired. She told me her friend who sells the drinks to her told her the energy drink would help her lose weight and get through a workout and since she was overweight she assumed she should power through. I recommended she stop drinking that stuff, take a break from the gym and start walking. She lost 10 pounds in a month because she was sleeping better, not pushing her body beyond its limits and eating real food.
I could go on and on with examples. Almost 5 years of coaching has given me more than adequate stories of people who stopped listening to themselves and started listening to everyone else. I urge you to get back to the basics with your health. Don’t take a pill just to allow you to eat that spicy food…your body is rebelling for a reason. Find out WHY spicy food bothers you. Don’t workout if your energy is in the tank. Talk a meditative walk or even a nap instead and tune into why you are tired. Most of all stop listening to everyone else about what you should or should not eat. Stick with whole food principles as we were intended to feed ourselves. This idea is as old as time and how we were able to evolve as a species so consider it NATURE telling you how to eat. Can you imagine how far we would have evolved on fast food and energy drinks? I shudder to think.
Taking one step for better health is all you have to do…just one step. Then as you are able…take another. Our body responds as it is able, the healthier you are the faster your body excels at even better health.
